Bassett record first win of the season

From the kick off Joel Swann picked up a rebound and passed it off to James Tasker, whose cross was met by Chris Stewart, who put the ball away to make it 1-0. Stewart was unlucky a few minutes later not to make it 2-0 when his shot went just over the bar. Purton gave away a corner which Swann was unable to get into the box due to good defending by Purton and then another corner was given. This time Swann made a short pass to Nicholas Southern but a defender beat him to the ball and the resulting throw in came to nothing. James Tasker picked up a loose ball in midfield and carried it towards goal and his cross found Daley, whose shot rebounded against Purton and set them free and on the break Purton made it 1-1. Purton forced Bassett back into their own half and had 2 shots that went wide. The goal kick by Jamie Wakefield reached Martyn Plaistow and James Tasker up front but as they surged forward the Purton keeper kicked it out, only to reach Gareth Evans, who released Stewart to cross to Swann, who put it just wide of the right hand goal post. Bassett continued to have their presence felt but even with all the play, no goals were forthcoming. A free kick was awarded to Purton due to a high kick but the result of it was a steal by Bassett with Evans sending Swann forward with only the keeper to beat but was saved. Bassett were then awarded a free kick for a high kick which Swann send the ball over Purton's defence to Tasker, who was unlucky not to score as the ball skimmed over the goal. Bassett produced insurmountable pushes forward but were unable to capitalise on any and at half time it was 1-1.

The second half started like a firecracker with Tasker and Plaistow combining but could only put it wide. A through ball by Alfie Passingham went to Swann, who put Plaistow through but no goal. Southern was substituted by Craig Mooney and Bassett went into a 3-5-2 formation. A solid defence of George Bartlett, Leigh Little and Passingham combined well and then Bartlett started a great Bassett run passing to Little, Mooney, Daley, Swann and Tasker who smashed it home to make it 2-1. Two minutes later a cross from Tasker reached Plaistow who tapped it in for 3-1. An injured Little was substituted by Jordan Embling and again Bassett had a reshuffle with Daley coming in as left back and Embling slipping into midfield. Further attacks by Bassett were fruitless as shots from Evans/Mooney and Swann all missed before Evans finally put one home and 4-1. Bassett's final goal came from a corner from Swann which was met by Plaistow who found the back of the net and 5-1. From here both teams had chances but on the day it was definitely Bassett's time with good ground play coming from all areas of the field.
