This was a game which either team could have won. Bassett started attacking right from the off set and were unlucky not to score 2 within the first 10 minutes with the ball either going wide or just over the net. Lydiard's goals all came in the first half, including a penalty.

After a half time team talk Bassett came out bursting with energy but their first goal eluded them until well in to the second half. It came from good build up from the back and was worked down the pitch until Martyn Plaistow planted it home. Bassett then pressed on, kept a tiring Lydiard at bay, and were unlucky on six other occasions not to score.
