31 Oct 2010 - Highworth Town Juniors (A)

With no fixture today we arranged a friendly against a good Highworth side. Both teams took the opportunity to play a few players who haven't featured as much in previous matches. Harrison with his debut for the team started in midfield and showed some promise for the season as he contributed to an excellent first half.

Daniel and Alex were very solid at the back and Daniel was able to create plenty as well – another very good performance today from Dan our captain. Hadley and Joe were working brilliantly together with some lovely interplay. Joe gave us the lead with a neat finish after some good close control. Hadley then took over and two lovely left foot strikes gave us a 3:1 half time lead. Both of Hadley's goals were from the edge of the area and both were struck superbly into the corner with good technique.

The 2nd half was a different story. Highworth brought on an entire new team with what looked like their regular starters. They put us under pressure from the start and soon clawed back our lead with some accomplished finishing. A quality 4th goal from their big lad up front saw Highworth take the lead and they looked more and more likely to add to their tally. Some solid defending was keeping them at bay however with Elliot growing in confidence as he put in tackle after tackle; a good performance today from Elliot.

With just a couple of minutes remaining we got a free kick some 25 yards from goal. Highworth put up a 4 man wall and Joe didn't look to have much of a target to aim at. He stepped up though and fired in a perfect free kick into the top corner of the net. A great goal and a worthy equaliser for a well deserved draw.

Alex was awarded this week's man of the match for some top quality defending. It's so rewarding for the coach to see players taking what they practiced in training into the matches and Alex has done just that. Adding the willingness to learn to the natural positioning and awareness that Alex has got, has turned him into a valuable member of the team already. Keep it up Alex!
