Two out of three will assure Bassett of league title

An Ian John header three minutes from time gave Bassett an all important win away at Oldacre on Saturday. This now leaves Bassett requiring two wins from their last three games to be sure of the league title. Bassett had got off to a fine start, despite playing up the slope, with a goal after seven minutes. A long free kick from Woods was flicked on by McKay for Hanrahan to volley home. Bassett continued to keep the pressure on Oldacre but failed to make the most of it. McKay was busy in midfield and half chances were created for York and Hanrahan but they shot wide of the target. Gradually Bassett slowly lost their impetus and Oldacre came back into the game for the last 15 minutes of the half. Their equaliser came on the half hour from a misunderstanding in the Bassett defence when Woods attempted to head the ball back to Rees who had come to meet it, and the ball ended up in the back of the net. Oldacre nearly took the lead five minutes later when Bob Moore turned Haines superbly but fired up and over.

The second half saw Bassett in the ascendancy but never really taking control. They created a couple of chances early in the half, but both were scrambled clear. Oldacre then nearly took the lead after 65 minutes, but Rees just got his fingers to a stinging drive. Bassett felt they should have had a penalty ten minutes later when York appeared to be pulled back in the box, but the referee gave the free kick just outside. And so it seemed Bassett were going to have to make do with a point when up popped Johns to meet a McKay free kick to head past Comer.
