Bassett retain position at top

On an extremely muddy and tacky pitch at Corsham, Bassett came away 2-0 winners to retain their position at the top of the Wilts League. Indeed, it was the pitch that dominated the game and turned it into the dour affair it proved to be, accurate passing was difficult and running with the ball was next to impossible. On this sort of pitch the order of the day is hard work and both teams showed the industrious side to their game. The first half proved fairly uneventful but those chances that were created came Bassett's way. Damon York and Vines both had good opportunities, before Frost opened the scoring after 25 minutes. Some good Bassett midfield play saw Frost break clear and his cross-shot eluded the keeper. Corsham responded quickly and Rees had to be alert to save a shot that came through a ridge of players. Bassett should have increased their lead when a cross from Walker was only half cleared and fell to Harrison, who completely missed his shot.

Corsham came out for the second half determined and the first 15 minutes proved their best period of the game. A combination of some alert keeping by Rees and good defensive work from Bowden kept them at bay and allowed Bassett to regain control. Hanrahan wasted a good opportunity and then headed just over before Bassett increased their lead. Damon York had beaten a couple of players and run on into the box when he was pulled down by the keeper for Bassett once again to be awarded a penalty, and Bowden, shot it confidently home. This sort of pitch never allows good football to be played and can be a great leveller of teams, so Bassett can be reasonably pleased to have come away with the two points.
