Dominated game with easy play

Wootton Bassett threatened to repeat their 7-0 defeat of Laverstock & Ford earlier in the season but a combination of the woodwork and missed chances restricted the score to 4-1. Apart from the first 20 minutes of the second half, it was a game which Bassett dominated with relative ease.

The first half saw Bassett open up in lively mood, early chances coming for Frost, Hanrahan and Harrison. The opening goal came in the 15th minute when Frost was pulled back in the box and Bowden despatched the resulting penalty. The second followed 10 minutes later and showed how easy football should be. John picked the ball up on the edge of his own played it down the right touchline to Frost. He took it on down the right and then put in a lovely cross which York met on the volley to fire home. The third goal after 33 minutes was equally as good as the second but in contrast to it as it was an individual effort. Harrison received the ball around the halfway line beat his man and set off into the opposition half. Frost made a good run to the right and took a defender with him, leaving Harrison with just the keeper to beat. This he did and then shot home, the ball taking a slight deflection off a defender.

Bassett should have come out of the second half determined to continue where they left off but instead they tended to sit back and this let Laverstock back into the game, after 60 minutes a cross from the right being well met by Andrews on the volley. This proved to be the spur Bassett needed and they gradually regained control. The last 20 minutes was all Bassett. Hanrahan twice, York and Harrison all hit the woodwork, while Hanrahan and York also missed golden opportunities. It was left to Vines to add to the score when he met York's corner with a first header that gave the Laverstock keeper no chance.

Next week Bassett are away to Bemerton, a tough fixture, while the reserves face Bremerton's reserves at home, kick-off 3.00pm.
