Two further points in League quest

On a day when most league games in the Swindon area were called off because of waterlogged pitches, Wootton Bassett were able to continue their pursuit of the Division 1 title when they entertained Bemerton. From the start, Wootton Bassett, playing their first game for three weeks, quickly took command of the game and played some good attractive football. It gave the impression that perhaps a goal rout was in the offing, but despite good approach work were not able to capitalise on the chances created, although Frost, York and McKay came close on occasions. It wasn't until the 25th minute that, following some good work on the right and a good cross, enabled Frost to score with a glancing header to put Bassett into the lead. Bassett continued to play good determined and constructive football with McKay and Harrison particularly industrious in midfield. They maintained the pressure on the Bemerton defence. It was through this relentless pressure that once again following neat play on the right, an unselfish pass by Frost (who could have easily attempted to take the ball further), found Harrison on the edge of the Bemerton penalty area. Through a crowd of players, Harrison's shot went into the goal off the post to give Bassett a 2-0 lead. Bassett must have been pleased with this first half display as they had played some very good team football and had prevented Bemerton from any worthwhile attacks.

Unfortunately, the momentum didn't continue during the second half and Bassett at times found it difficult to work their way out of their own half, and were at times put under pressure by Bemerton, but sound defending by Bassett kept them at bay and prevented Bemerton from scoring. Another two points then for Bassett in their quest for the Wilts League title. Next week they will again be in league action, entertaining Ferndale, one of the championship challengers, kick-off 2.30PM.
