Extra time needed to settle Ghia Cup match

Extra time was needed on Saturday to settle a fine Ghia senior cup match between Wootton Bassett and Old Manor, Bassett making it through to the next round by virtue of a Bowden penalty. True to the old saying it was a game of two halves, the first belonging to Bassett and the second to Old Manor. The home supporters must have been pleased to see their side start so positively and take the lead in the 20th minute. Hanrahan bustled his way through and passed to an unmarked Frost whose shot from the edge of the box went in off the post.

Bassett remained in control and should have added to the lead, Vines twice heading wide from good opportunities. However, Old Manor held strong and in the last five minutes of the half gave a taste of what was to come. Harrison clearing twice off the line, and Rees denying Rushton with a marvellous reflex save.

The second half was the reverse of the first, Bassett now being under pressure for large periods. Rees continued to pull off some fine saves, and Ian Johns defended well, but all to no avail the equaliser coming 10 minutes from the end when Scott was allowed time and space to head home. The first period of extra time saw Bassett regain the upper hand and also the lead. After a period of sustained pressure Bassett were awarded a penalty, a sharp-eyed linesman spotting York getting kicked in an off the ball incident. York also had an opportunity to make it certain in the second period but his lob over the keeper was just too high.
