Much needed Bassett boost

Wootton Bassett, who had lost three games out of the last four, gave themselves a much-needed boost with a fine win over Plessey Sports last Wednesday. They played much more like the side who had gone nineteen league games without defeat. The unavailability of McKay, Harrison and Johns made manager Woolford put out a 4-4-2 formation and this proved successful as early as the fifth minute when York latched onto a loose ball in the box to fire home. Seven minutes later Bassett were two up when Jell stole into the box to help himself to his second goal in as many games. Bassett remained on top for the rest of the half, though a couple of lapses of concentration meant Rees was called into action. Further chances were created but none taken.

The second half saw Plessey playing with the wind and for the first ten minutes of the half they pushed Bassett back but no goal was forthcoming. As Bassett gradually regained control of the game so Plessey's heads dropped and the physical side of their game became more apparent. Bassett's third came after 65 minutes when York found himself through with just the keeper to beat. His shot rebounded off the keeper but York nudged the ball square for Frost to shoot home. Ten minutes later York got it all right when a super long ball from Haines left him again with just the keeper to beat, which he did, shooting to his left. Plessey scored a consolation with five minute of the game remaining when Bown, who had been the major threat to Bassett all game, particularly in the air, side footed home a cross from the left.
