Title Hopes Rocked

Hardwicke Playing Fields, 23rd March 2013

Wootton Bassett Town started this unusually frigid late March Saturday with a chance to pull within three points of Division One West leaders Brimscombe and Thrupp. However, they finished it on the receiving end of a decisive 3-0 thumping at the hands of reigning champions Tytherington Rocks.

Rocks' manager Gary Powell had spoken before the game of wanting his side to have a say in the title race, despite finding themselves out of the running after a middling run during February. And that they did.

Starting early - their opener came on six minutes through Jack Smyth, Tytherington had their guests on the ropes immediately. Although Dave Turner named an attacking starting eleven, which included Shaun Terry, Mark Barnes, Steve Robertson and Tom Dingle, it was the home side's firepower that caused the most damage.

With just five games remaining, Bassett need a significant amount of help if they are to be crowned champions. A top two finish - a fine achievement itself - appears to be on the cards. But a place on top of the tree is all the better.
