Five Star Performance Seals Seventh Straight Victory

Webb's Wood Stadium, 3rd November 2012

Mark Barnes scores for fun and Wootton Bassett Town win. Nothing new there.

A convincing 5-1 victory against New College gave Dave Turner's team their seventh straight triumph and sent them level on points with leaders Brimscombe and Thrupp ahead of next week's showdown of the Division One West table toppers. Meanwhile, the gap between second and third place Tytherington Rocks increased to nine points, with Bassett still holding a game in hand.

The contest with the struggling college side was really over by half time. Barnes, who now has 23 goals to his name, struck his team's first on 19 minutes and quickly doubled the advantage no more than 180 seconds later. Then ten minutes before the break Tom Dingle hit his first of the season.

Any faint hopes the hosts had of making their visitors nervous ended just after the hour mark when young full back Aaron Dainton opened his first team account. New College did pull a goal back with six minutes remaining, but Barnes had the final say, completing his hat-trick and another fine day at the office in the game's dying moments.

It was a fine way to go into next weekend's mouthwatering game when Brimscombe visit Rylands Way. The only thing separating the two sides currently is the Gloucestershire outfit's far superior goal difference. Three points next week though and it would be advantage Bassett. By no means is it an all or nothing fixture; with a game in hand, Turner's troops would still have the chance to pull level.

Yet the team that comes out on top Saturday will have made a statement, and who knows what it could potentially mean at season's end.
