Mr Dependable does it again

Rylands Way, 20th October 2012

He scores. And he scores. And he scores. And he scores. There seems to be no stopping Mark Barnes this season. With a match winning brace, Bassett's sharpshooter moved onto twenty goals in all competitions so far - and it's not even November yet. Meanwhile, his side moved further clear of the chasing Division One West pack as Fairford Town were defeated by the odd goal in three.

It was a scrappy affair at Rylands Way, devoid of any real quality. That is except for when Barnes found the back of the net, the front man producing two top calibre finishes to seal the three points.

He gave his side the lead midway through the first half, pouncing on a fortunate break to finish well.

Fairford, themselves in the mix in the division's top half, got back on level terms in the 70th minute as Shannon Pocock put away a penalty.

But four minutes later Barnes sealed the deal and helped give Bassett a seven point cushion over their fifth place local rivals with a game still in hand. The two sides above Fairford - Old Woodstock Town and Tytherington Rocks - both trail by six points having played more times so far than Bassett.

All in all, it's been a terrific first third of the campaign for Dave Turner and his charges. Just five points from a possible thirty have been dropped and the team looks strong in all areas, particularly up top. And that is thanks in no small part to their prolific talisman.
