Champions Defeated

Rylands Way, 28th August 2012

Wootton Bassett Town came from behind to defeat last season's Division One West champions Tytherington Rocks 2-1. Victory lifted Dave Turner's team back to the top of the table and means they finished August unbeaten in all competitions.

The Rocks came into the game full of confidence on the back of a 4-0 thrashing of North Leigh Reserves and drew first blood when Joe White headed home nine minutes before half time.

But the home side struck back on the hour when the prolific Mark Barnes stroked home a penalty.

Just as August has been Bassett's month, it has belonged to Barnes too. And it was to be of little surprise that the former Supermarine man grabbed what proved to be the winning goal, his tenth of the embryonic season, eight minutes later. Shaun Terry's through ball split the defence and Barnes kept his composure to finish a one-on-one opportunity.

It was back to the walls stuff at times for a much changed Bassett side - four of the back five from the FA Cup win against Hamworthy United were missing, with Liam Edmondson the only surviving defender. Stewart Thompson deputised in goal for the suspended James Domm, while Aaron Dainton, Luke Sharps and Lee Bowen replaced Craig Bowden, Adam Corcoran and Shaun Carter.

But they stood strong the majority of the evening, preserving a valuable three points.
