Dingle double delivers another crucial victory

Rylands Way, 23rd February 2013

Wootton Bassett Town had been there before only too recently against Old Woodstock Town. Having taken the lead, Dave Turner's team were pegged back as their Oxfordshire opponents ensured parity was restored prior to the break. But, just like a month ago, the second half saw Bassett surge ahead to claim the three points.

Last time round it was Shaun Terry who steered his side to victory. Ruled out because of a suspension, his replacement Tom Dingle stepped into the breach, netting twice in the space of fifteen minutes in a 3-1 home win.

The Rylands Way outfit had earlier gone ahead when defender Liam Edmondson scored for the second time in as many weeks after twenty minutes. Renowned for his defensive abilities, he has also proven to be a threat at the other end and now stands alone in fifth on the scoring charts for this season.

Less than quarter of an hour later, however, the scores were tied when Danny Green struck for the visitors.

Having to go again proved no problem for Bassett though. Dingle, extremely impressive in the past couple of weeks – be it at full back or in his natural centre forward position - restored their advantage in the 55th minute and found the back of the net again shortly after to put the hosts in a commanding position.

While unable to claw back any ground on rampant leaders Brimscombe and Thrupp, Bassett pulled further ahead of Tytherington Rocks – the most likely challengers in the chasing pack – after they lost at home for the first time since November against Fairford Town. Thirteen points now separate Turner's troops and the reigning champions; Fairford are eight back but have played three more games.

A promotion spot is now well within sight – the task now is to continue the positive form that has been shown since the defeat against Brimscombe. If that occurs, then who knows, even claiming the Division One West title could be possible.
