Sunday 24th January 2010 - Marlborough Town Youth (A)

Marlborough looked to be a better and more organised team than when we played them on the first day of the season and were somewhat unlucky to concede an own goal early in the game.

Ben King and Sam Stacey worked tirelessly in midfield and were creating plenty of chances for Joe Mitchell up front. Joe spurned a few of these chances as the Marlborough keeper closed Joe down well on a few occasions when left one on one.

Joe continued to threaten though and scored twice in quick succession with two good shots.

The best goal of the match came early in the second half; Sam made an excellent run down the wing, beating several players before crossing to Ben who put the ball in at the far post where Joe was running in to smash the ball into the roof of the net.

Joe added a 5th when he finished well when put through on goal, and Sam scored a well deserved first goal for us with a neat finish from the edge of the box.

Marlborough came back into the game when a few changes were made to the usual solid defensive pairing, but by then we had already sewn the game up.

An all round good performance from the team today with Ben and Sam putting loads of effort in, Daniel having a very solid game in goal, good defensive work again from Nick and Josh and Nicky and Alex showing great commitment. Joe deserves a mention for once again showing why he is top of the league's goal scoring chart with some super attacking play.

The star of today's game though for me was Jake Ball who showed a superb attitude! Started in midfield, moved to attack when Joe went off, then put back in defence when required to. He was even standing around at half time wearing his goalkeeping gloves, hoping to get a chance in goal too! Although it wasn't Jake's favoured position in defence, he looked completely comfortable, intercepting and tackling at the back for the last 10 minutes of the game. Well done Jake.
