Superb comeback in last league game of the season

After watching Wootton Bassett under 12's come from 5 – 1 down at half time and almost snatch victory in the most unlikely fashion, I feel as if what ever is written in this match report just won't do the boys justice. We should probably employ a top sports writer but even then he would probably fall well short. Everything about this game was fantastic! Our 1st half performance was fantastically bad, and our 2nd half fight back was fantastically brilliant. For the opening 10 minutes everything was progressing nicely. The team was managing to contain a lively Brunel side that had won the league title the previous week. We even managed to take the lead with a fine goal scored by the ever reliable Harry Fitzwilliams. But, in traditional Bassett fashion the wheel came well and truly off when the boys decided to hand 'victory' over to Brunel with some shocking defending, not only by the lads at the back, but by the whole team. Time after time players were left unattended in the penalty area and Brunel took full advantage. In truth we were lucky to be only 4 behind when the half time whistle blew.

At half time some stern words from the coaches, changes in personnel and positions seemed to stem the flow of attacking by Brunel, and in true Oil Tanker fashion we gradually dragged ourselves back from the dead. When Craig Kelly got the score to 5 – 2 we all got mildly excited, Harry Fitzwilliams and Brett Embling get us to 5 – 4 and we all believed we could do it. With about 8 minutes remaining it was all one way traffic towards the Brunel goal but could we get that 5th goal? Answer, yes we could. Great midfield play and a fine pass to Ben Curtis left him one on one with the keeper and from the moment the ball left his boot there was no doubt. At 5 – 5 we could have gone on and won the game. We hit the cross bar, and their keeper made a couple of fine saves, but we couldn't quite get the 6th goal and settled for a well earned point. This was the under 12's last game of a season which saw a great improvement on the previous campaign, and hopefully we shall see a similar improvement next season.
