Bassett involved in a rollercoaster

This game was a real rollercoaster of a match. Old Town played fine pass and move football and Wootton Bassett hustled and harried never giving the home side a moment to relax. From the beginning the game revolved around Old Town pushing and probing with Bassett playing on the counter attack. On several occasions the home side looked likely to score but a fine through ball played Ben Curtis in and with an absolutely fantastic chip shot the visiting team took the lead. This marked the beginning of a period of dominance from Wootton Bassett when on any other day we would have scored 2 or 3 more. However Old Town kept playing there patient football and when Bassett failed to clear the ball all Jack Mason could do was pick the ball from the net.

Still Wootton Bassett looked a threat and a fine turn on the edge of the box from Harry Fitzwilliams created space for a shot only to see the keeper make a good save. Eventually Bassett created space for Harry to run through and this time his shot finished up in the net. Unfortunately there was still time for Old Town to even up the score and the first half ended 2 - 2. After the break it was counter attack after counter attack, first Old Town gained control only for Bassett to turn the tide and enjoy periods of dominance. The next goal fell to Old Town when again the defence failed to deal with an angled ball played up to the strikers. At this stage Bassett made three changes taking off Tom Deane, Chris Bryant and Dan Butt and bringing on Drew Blinkhorn, Craig Hunt and, making his debut, Dan Matthews. Almost immediately Bassett played Ben Curtis in and his fine shot gave the keeper no chance.

With only 8 minutes remaining Old Town looked to have hit Bassett with a hammer blow by taking the score to 4 - 3 but the Wootton Bassett spirit shone through and tremendous pressure and a magnificent run from Harry saw his shot thunder onto the cross bar and down behind the line. The 'was it over the line or not' debate was silenced as Ben Curtis followed the ball and crashed it into the net. Later Ben confirmed that the ball was over the line.

All through this match the boys played with great determination against the team 2nd in the table. The defence played well with Craig Kelly and Phil Barber outstanding. The midfield was good, probably better in the 2nd half and Ben Curtis and Harry Fitzwilliams were tremendous up front. I think I speak for all in saying how proud we were of all the Boys.
