Another entertaining & competitive game with Old Town

Games between Wootton Bassett and Old Town have always been entertaining and very competitive, this one was no exception. Bassett started off with regular left back Phil Barber sidelined with flu and Old Town had to play with there 1st choice keeper unavailable. From the beginning Bassett pushed the Old Town team deep into there own half and 2 terrific saves from the stand in keeper kept the scores level. Inevitably Old Town came into the match and their spell of pressure resulted in a corner kick. The well rehearsed set piece left the Bassett defence flat footed and saw Old Town go into a 10th minute lead. Things would soon get worse for Bassett. More good possession play from Old Town saw several passes around the home teams 18yd box and a good shot nestled in the top right hand corner of the net. Still the home side kept battling and probing and although the score remained 0 – 2 until half time good effort from Wootton Bassett probably deserved at least a goal.

After the break Bassett began to gain a slight advantage. Brett Carr and Callum Walsh combined well in midfield and indeed it was a through ball from Callum which released Ben Curtis. His brilliantly executed curling shot beat the despairing save from the Old Town Keeper and the score was 1 – 2. Next it was Harry Fitzwilliams to have a shot. His 25 yard effort was goal bound but the mud and a terrific chase from an Old Town defender saw the ball bounce against the left upright. Tough luck was to befriend Wootton Bassett when the Old Town No. 9 was released by the midfield. His angled run towards goal was unopposed and a fine shot played across Jack Mason in goal restored the visitors 2 goal advantage.

Still Bassett kept up the pressure. Craig Kelly in defence swapped position with the midfielder Callum Walsh and Matt Buckingham came on for Craig Hunt. Craig Kelly's determination and drive forced Old Town to defend more nervously and after several raids Harry Fitzwilliams found space in the box to chip the Old Town keeper. His initial effort was saved but a second attempt from the same player brought the score to 2 – 3. With only a few minutes remaining it looked as if Bassett might get back on level terms but Old Town held on and probable just about deserved to take the 3 points. This was a tough battle between 2 well matched sides.
