Defeat for Bassett in opening league game

Wootton Bassett Under 12's started off the new season in a similar vein to the last campaign by dominating the first half and then falling away in the second. The away side created several good chances to score during the 1st half with the midfield and strikers working well together, but good defending and poor understanding of the off side rule meant that it wasn't until 15 minutes in that Bassett scored via a good midfield pass and a fine run and shot from Ben Curtis. Unfortunately the lead only lasted for a couple of minutes when a failure to clear the ball from just outside the penalty area saw the ball fall at a Liden players feet and his firm shot went through the keepers hands and into the net. At 1-1 Bassett continued to go forward and again a good pass from Chris Bryant released Harry Fitzwilliams. Harry cut in from the right flank and his fierce drive was too hot for the Liden keeper. Wootton Bassett kept the lead until 30 seconds from the break when again, poor defending allowed Liden to shoot into a practically empty net.

At 2-2 the game was evenly poised but the travelling team were full of confidence due to controlling most of the 1st half. Unfortunately the WB midfield lost their control and a failure to match the Liden runs meant that 3 goals were leaked where really the away team should have secured the win.
