Bassett in exciting cup win

This was game was the very essence of cup football. Two totally committed sides, a muddy slippery pitch and filthy weather. Wootton Bassett started off well and even showed a bit of swagger with some slick passing and running off the ball. It was no surprise when the home side took the lead when a through ball was met by the impressive Harry Fitzwilliams and his blistering shot gave the Shaw keeper no chance. Bassett continued pushing forward and had chances to score from a good shot from the hard working Craig Hunt and a header from Callum Walsh. Terry had to make a change when star striker Ben Curtis had to leave the field due to feeling unwell. Chris Bryant came on in midfield and Harry was supported by Joe Leedham up front. The half ended with Bassett moving forward leaving Jack Mason in goal a virtual spectator.

After the break things got even better when, after a terrific through ball from Chris Bryant, Harry Fitzwilliams ran through and again fired the ball high into the corner of the net to gain a 2 - 0 advantage. This was as good as it got for Wootton Bassett. It was as if someone in the crowd had operated a panic alarm because for the last 15 minutes Shaw, with the wind at there backs mounted wave after wave of attacks which saw Wootton Bassett become encamped in there own half. The inevitable happened when a looping ball into the box was poorly defended and the ball was smashed into the Bassett net. The attacks from Shaw continued and some last ditch defending from a rapidly tiring home side just managed to stave off the equalising goal. At the final whistle the home support all breathed a sigh of relief. Wootton Bassett were through - bring on Stratton in round 2.
