Hard fought draw with Wroughton

Wootton Bassett continued with there steady start to the season with a hard fought 1 - 1 draw against a well balanced Wroughton team. After winning the toss Bassett kicked off and, after several periods of pressure looked to be gaining the advantage. This was to end when poor defending allowed a Wroughton player to shoot from 8 yards out and still have time to knock in the goal after a good save from Jack Mason. However, our boy's heads didn't drop and we continued to play with determination, attacking and defending as a team. The remainder of the 1st half saw Chris Edwards, Ben Curtis and Harry Fitzwilliams all come close to equalising, and Jack Mason pull off a couple of fine saves when required. The second half started off with Bassett earning a free kick for hand ball on the edge of the penalty area. Harry Fitzwilliams stepped up to the ball and, Beckham like, curled his shot up and over the wall and just under the bar. Wroughton then had a period where they gained control and only great goal keeping from the impressive Jack Mason kept the scores level. On 16 minutes a great pass from Callum Walsh released Ben Curtis. His run to goal was hampered by some strong defending, and the outrushing keeper managed to ensure that Bens shot just went wide of the left upright. Further efforts from Dan Butt, Ben and Harry almost clinched the win but in the end two well matched teams shared the points. This was a fine display from all the boys and with the 3 subs - Joe Leedham, Chris Bryant and Drew Blinkhorn all coming and performing well points to an exciting far better season to come.
