Good showing against the league leaders

Wootton Bassett under 12's have just played the best game of the season so far at table toppers Brunel. For the entire 1st half we gave the home side the scare of there lives by leading 3 – 2 but unfortunately couldn't hold the lead, eventually losing 7 – 3.

At first glance anyone would think that 7 – 3 was a result from a one sided match but this was far from the truth. From the outset Bassett turned on the style with fine possession play, great passing and resolute defending. Even within the first 5 minutes 3 great chances fell to Harry & Ben but none was taken. However it was no surprise when, after a terrific through ball from Callum Walsh, Harry coolly slotted the ball into the top right hand corner to give Bassett a 1 – 0 lead. Brunel's one huge advantage however was their delivery of corner kicks into the penalty area. Their attacking players have learned to make full use of this and after 15 minutes Bassett were put to the sword. 1 – 1.

Wootton Bassett kept playing their football, never allowing Brunel time and space and again this caused Brunel to struggle in the middle of the pitch. Again Harry latched onto a pass and the ball was dispatched into the net. 2 – 1 Bassett. Another corner to Brunel, another goal, 2 – 2.

More drama followed just before the interval when the ball became stuck just in front of the Brunel goal under a group of players. Brett Embling was strongest of all and his outstretched leg forced the ball home. 3 – 2 Bassett at half time.

To say we were all proud would not be enough, the first half had been terrific, but with Brunels greater physical strength coupled with a heavy pitch and their great corner kicks Bassett were made to work harder and harder and gradually we were pushed deeper and deeper. At regular intervals throughout the 2nd half Brunel scored goals, 3 more from corners and 2 good shots. Bassett were always a threat and show great promise for next season. Well played everyone.
