Friendly defeat at the hands of Shaw

This was a hastily arranged friendly match using all available squad players and, although we were beaten, everyone enjoyed a good game played in fine weather. Missing several key players, especially up front, the Bassett team had an unfamiliar look with many players in changed positions. For the first ten minutes we controlled the game and our dominance produced a goal which started with a great pass out wide to Brett Carr. He ran into the penalty area and crossed the ball to the unmarked Craig Kelly and, unopposed, he walked the ball into the unguarded net. After the goal the team made three substitutions, again moving players into different positions. This brought Shaw into the game and was a chance to see how defenders coped under pressure. For the most part they managed to deny Shaw any real opportunities, but inevitably they did break through to level the score. With ten minutes to the interval Bassett again made three changes and straight away the team managed to release the hard working Brett Carr. His run forward looked to end in a certain goal but his shot hit the post and unfortunately the player following up just failed to get there first. With the scores 1-1 at half time it was anyone's game.

In the second half Bassett continued a policy of rotating players and trying players in different positions. This gave Shaw the chance to apply pressure and they took the lead in the 40th minute. After making our final three changes with ten minutes remaining Bassett reverted to a more conventional line-up and had a great chance to level when Brett Carr, Craig Hunt and Joe Topping combined well in a flowing move but the Shaw keeper made a great save. His parry fell at Brett's feet but he immediately fell on the ball denying us a goal. Everyone played their part, Jenny Hankinson made her first start and did well. Tom Hammond had a fine game in goal and we were unlucky not to draw the game.
