The proverbial game of two halves

Wootton Bassett's season is twisting and turning like a huge twisty turny thing. From the kick-off Bassett controlled the game with a terrific performance showing fine defending, commitment in the midfield and when given the opportunity, finishing with cool heads. Ten minutes into the game Ben Curtis was released via a fine pass from Tom Deane, he took the ball around the keeper and slotted the ball home. Wroughton then enjoyed much possession but some great defending never allowed the chance of an equaliser. Again good midfield play released the front two of Curtis and Fitzwilliams and with the ball at Harry's feet a terrific lob gave Bassett a two goal advantage. The home side again had plenty of the ball but could not find a way through to goal and Jack Mason was a virtual spectator between the posts. The same script ended with the same finale. A great through ball to Harry and the score was 3-0 to Wootton Bassett. Now the visitors began to dominate and Harry had a great run in from the left flank. Great skills and quick feet took him past three or four defenders, the keeper dived at his feet, Harry shot but unfortunately the ball smacked against the post.

At half time the players were buzzing but Wroughton had showed that they could still get back into the game. In the second half Bassett slowly allowed Wroughton to play more in midfield and the warning signs were there when they started to employ the same tactics that had served Bassett well in the first period. Still we held our three goal advantage until 12 minutes from time when Wroughton broke through. The striker ran towards goal, Jack Mason came out, Phil Barber ran to cover the line but he couldn't prevent the shot from going into the empty net. Within five minutes the score was 3-2 when another through ball was crashed home, and again two minutes from time the inevitable happened with Wroughton's third making the final score 3-3. Wootton Bassett couldn't have worked any harder. The commitment was tremendous and the whole team deserves to be congratulated. Well done everyone and a Merry Christmas to all the families of the squad.
