A win in a friendly with an unfriendly ending

An under strength side performed well on a bitterly cold day at The Red Bull Playing Fields, Malmesbury. We were the better side throughout the first half but failed to find the net even though we created a few decent chance. Our goal was defended resolutely by Dean Nichols and James Lownes, so much so that Phillip Parsons had to keep warm by running on the spot!

The second half saw an improved performance by our forwards Alec Daley and Oliver Stevens, who were now getting in front of the defenders allowing the ball to be held up in the Malmesbury half. Numerous corners went our way but their goal led a charmed life, we even had a shot cleared off the line. Then the breakthrough, the ball was moved through to the far post and after a good first touch, Alec Daley stroked the ball into the corner, 1-0 to Bassett! We then had a few niggly tackles from Malmesbury but the lads kept their composure and we went on to comfortably win 1-0. The whole team performed well with the defence being the rock. The midfield trio of Sean Miles, Tucker Blinkhorn and Brett Fairclough all chased and tackled well and the forward pairing of Alec Daley and Oliver Stevens improved greatly during the second half. The end of the game was sadly marred by the Malmesbury players refusing to shake hands. It then turned to name calling and both sets of players needed to be kept apart, this was a bitterly disappointing end to an otherwise entertaining game.
