Just a perfect day

A perfect day for footy, and a very entertaining and tough battle for two evenly matched teams. Without the help of our Swindon Town 'players', and two other absent regulars, a much weakened Bassett team pulled off a well deserved win against a strong Cricklade. The first half was dominated by Bassett, with Phil 'Digby' Parsons hardly seeing any action. Our first goal scored by one of our new recruits - Dean Nichols, making his debut in the first team, put Bassett 1 - 0 up after 5 minutes after some fine midfield work from Brett Fairclough and Vincent Tapster. Vince then scored an excellent goal of his own, making it 2 - 0. Our third goal, and well deserved after a good performance came from Oliver Stevens, ending the first half 3 - 0 up and in full control.

Dominic Gordon in defence was once again the rock on which the team played, he dominated the left hand side of the pitch and again, for the second game running rightly deserved the MOM award, not only for his passing and tackling, but for his command of the game, and his vocal support for his team mates, excellent performance.

Cricklade came right back into the game after the break and after a period of sustained pressure, and a couple of goal mouth scrambles, scored two goals in ten minutes, putting Bassett on the back foot, and we found it difficult to get out of our half. Full credit to the team, heads down and they battled for every ball, and was rewarded by an excellent goal from Vince, who was really unlucky not to score again from an excellent move started in defence from Dominic, a great cross from Oliver, and on the half volley, smashed into the crossbar. Another first class performance from Phil in Goal, keeping Bassett in the game in the second half with some brave and timely saves. Special mentions for James Stansall - terrific work rate and team play. James Lownds - another fine performance.
