Excellent win in the rain

A chance to see who the fair weather players are, and the first real test for our new showerjackets! Bassett started well and quickly commanded the midfield, moving and passing well and driving forward as a unit. It was no surprise that after 5 minutes, from some silky skills from Brett Fairclough, Alec Daley found himself on the scoresheet with a well timed run, and simple tap in. A well deserved lead and strong first 10 minutes. We were missing Dominic Gordon, who is a tower of strength at left back, and to cover for this, Vincent Tapster (recent signing) moved back into that position. Vinny played an excellent game, but had the tendency to 'wander' into midfield and attack, and constant sideline direction didn't seem to cure this. Inevitably we were caught with one on two at the back, and Ferndale scored a fine goal to make it level, leading into half time.

Shortly after the break, and some changes, James Stansall moved to right back, with Vinny staying on the left, a decisive move in the end. Bassett found their shape and began to play again and command the game. Brett Fairclough (Man of the Match), made two killer runs towards the right flag, attracting defenders and the attention of the keeper, to most brilliantly pass the ball in front of the goal between the defenders, for James French to clinically slot the ball into the goal, both second half goals being absolutely identical. Simple but very effective. Credit to Ferndale who didn't let their heads drop and continued battling, and a close penalty call (Andy who was ref, assured me the ball was played), and after a sustained period of pressure, Ferndale scored an excellent solo goal from their striker (who squandered two other goal scoring chances, through greed). In the dying moments, Phillip Parsons in goal made a super save and tipped a well struck shot over the bar, keeping Bassett in the lead. Credit to James Stansall who made some outstanding tackles in defence, and some very timely clearances.

With players missing, a greasy surface and some forced changes, a top class performance and win against a well organised, physical and difficult opponent. All the team performed well, but special praise must go to Brett Fairclough, his totally unselfish and mature performance was outstanding, the best I have seen. Special mention for Tucker Blinkhorn who battled hard in midfield, and was involved in every move. Great game from Vinny (but not the wandering), and some neat finishing from Alec Daley and James French.
