Bailey hat-trick keeps wind in Bassett's sails

Corinium Stadium, 11th April 2015

A Dan Bailey hat-trick lifted Wootton Bassett Town to a 4-1 victory over Holyport as Paul Braithwaite's team continued their wonderful end of season run.

On a gusty afternoon at the Corinium Stadium, Bassett's clinical finishing proved the difference between the teams.

They survived a first half in which the visitors were, for the most part, the better of the teams before taking the lead just prior to the break when Bailey hooked in a shot with his back to the goal.

That goal arrived very much against the run of play, Holyport having hit the bar, been thwarted three times by Luke Kuczynski when one-on-one and had an effort that appear to be destined for the back of the net brilliantly cleared off the line by Jack Ellis in the opening period.

With the wind behind their backs following the restart, Bassett quickly killed off the game.

Their goal run began with a stunning Bailey strike from the edge of the box. Steve Robertson then slotted in after rounding the 'keeper before a flowing move involving Robertson and returning captain Steve Yeardley was rounded off by Bailey.

All that meant as good as Steven Nott-Macaire's late goal for Holyport was - a volley on the half turn, it was of mere consolation.

Never before have Bassett gone nine unbeaten in the Hellenic League Premier Division, nor have they finished as high as eleventh, which they are now guaranteed. Two records down, a win against champions Flackwell Heath in their final game will make it a hat-trick as it would ensure a record haul of points in the Helllenic's top tier. Still plenty to play for then.
