Late heartbreak denies Bassett a landmark point

Corinium Stadium, 27th September 2014

Wootton Bassett Town's 900th Hellenic League game certainly was not without incident. Yet their tussle with Ascot United ended in a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat, a stoppage time goal from the visitors rendering futile a sterling second half comeback from Bassett.

The home team trailed 2-0 after just 15 minutes. Ascot's first came when Jesse Wilson skipped through the Bassett defence and slotted home. Minutes later Jermaine Roche doubled the lead, taking advantage of a rare Ben Mitchell mistake. Opting to throw, the 'keeper sent the ball straight to the Ascot forward who finished comfortably.

Fortunately for Paul Braithwaite's side, that was all the damage Ascot would do in the opening period. And that allowed captain Steve Yeardley to get his team back into the game two minutes after the restart.

It was Yeardley who then brought the scores level with four minutes remaining with a bullet header.

But a point against a team who began the day in second place was cruelly snatched away in the second minute of injury time. And Ascot's winner was an ugly one, coming from a goalmouth scramble with both Joe Grant and Rob Geri making a claim that the goal was theirs.

For Bassett, the identity of the scorer was irrelevant: this was a cruel, cruel defeat.
