Second half surge sees off Saracens

Corinium Stadium, 17th September 2014

A quality second half performance that yielded five goals saw Wootton Bassett Town past bottom side Cheltenham Saracens as Paul Braithwaite's team recorded a 5-1 victory.

However, despite the final score, Braithwaite was left bemoaning a first half display in which his side were not at that races. And that allowed Saracens to go into the break a goal to the good thanks to Leigh Rayston's 45th minute strike.

Whatever words the Bassett boss had for his team at half time certainly worked though. Playing with pace and a purpose that had been sorely lacking during the opening period, it took just quarter of an hour for them to move in front.

Captain Steve Yeardley began the charge, netting two minutes after the restart for his first goal since December 2012. Shaun Terry had been waiting four months fewer than his teammate to find the back of the net, but the veteran then ended his drought with a stylish finish on the hour.

Cheltenham were soon out of sight. Dan Bailey curled in a free kick before James Skinner quickly made it 4-1, stabbing in from close range.

Bailey then added the fifth in the game's dying stages to complete the turnaround as Bassett made it three wins on the bounce.
