Defence asleep in the heat

Today's game saw us travel across town to play a mid table Eldene Rangers in what turned out to be the hottest day of the year so far.

The game started brightly with Eldene quick on the attack, the defence of Callum and Miles seemed to out for a Sunday morning snooze, with Callum not really getting into the game at all. Jake, JD and Jed done well in midfield winning the ball and doing some good runs, but they must remember the front man – this week Josh who many a time called for the ball as he was in space but was not passed it.

We did struggle at the back today and it was just a case of poor finishing by Eldene and good goal-keeping by George B that we were lucky not to find ourselves 3 or 4 down by half time, remarkably we went into the break a goal up. A good corner ball by Josh which resulted in good footwork and turn by Jed who got the ball to Jake who took a shot and saw it hit the back of the net, much to the relief of the Bassett parents. We were unlucky not to double the lead before the break when a throw in by Josh found Jake again who this time saw his shot go just over.

The welcomed half time whistle came and with drinks taken on board, Miles was switched to midfield with JD dropping back to defence to see if he could spark some life into Callum, but it was not to be. With us sometimes feeling as if we were only playing with 5 boys it was from one of these lapse's in defence by Callum that saw Eldene draw level. The kick off again and Eldene were soon beginning to see this weakness in the team and went straight on the attack, and another blunder by defence saw Eldene pull in front.

We soon found ourselves three one down in very quick succession when a corner ball by Eldene was pulled out to the middle of the area and a good shot found the back of the net passed the outstretched arms of George.

With Miles and JD swapped back, a more revitalised Miles in defence started to make the difference, if only this had been the case from the off, with both him and Callum it could have been a different final score-line. A good run by Miles who found Jake who slipped pass the Eldene midfield, with Josh calling for the ball, Jake went for goal and shot just over.

When another corner was won by Eldene a repeat of their third goal saw them take a three goal advantage.

With Bassett struggling in the heat and with no subs to help out we continued to try to find a way through, but Eldene were doing all they could to stop us, including some shirt pulling and mis-timed tackles, it was from one of these that Jake was taken down, a free-kick awarded which Jake himself stepped up to take and he hit it well and the Eldene goalie could do nothing as the ball sailed over his head into the top corner.

When the final whistle blew the result of 4-2 stood, we were unlucky not to get a point from this game but in the first half done well not to concede any. The boys have to remember to remain focused on the game, they either want to play or don't, there is no in between, as not being completely in it not only are they letting themselves down but also the rest of the team. We are currently at the bottom, but we shouldn't be – we've had some good performances recently and have been unlucky not to get more points of the board than we have.
