Bassett fall foul of April Fool to lose 3-0 at home

Today saw us entertain Ferndale with the prospect of a win today would see us move of the bottom of the table with Croft & Old Town playing each other, but it was not to be.

Ferndale started the brighter of the two teams with attacks on the Bassett goal being so constant even the Ferndale goalie was getting bored in his area and came up to join the attack. With Bassett at times struggling to clear the ball from their area, we were also battling against the wind, compared to last week when we drew one and won one game this was a different story altogether.

Bassett looked sluggish through the centre with every run by made by Jake and Danny Ferndale was cutting them down all the time, sometimes fairly but there was also a lot of shirt pulling and niggling play.

We thought the break through for the opposition came when the ball was in our gaol area saw Callum and Miles struggling to clear the ball, and JD with a mis-timed tackle saw the opposing player hit the ground and a penalty awarded against us, the Ferndale player stood up – shot and hit the post. The resulting throw in by Miles saw Jake go on a run through the centre and passed to George D who was up front and shot just over. With Ferndale gaining confidence over a lack lustre Bassett team saw corner after corner in our area and from one of these they managed to hit the post again. A goal kick from George B was then intercepted once again by an opposing player who managed to run straight through our centre onto goal and went on to score unchallenged. Hopefully this would shock us into action and it did for a while with Miles going on one of his walkabouts seeing if he could get a breakthrough run straight through the Ferndale team and was unlucky not to find a Bassett player at the end or even a goal for his efforts. Half time whistle blew and we were down 1-0.

Second half started and we hoped playing with the wind for us would see us perform as we had last week, but it soon turnout out this was not to be the case, with a swap up front we saw Jake up front and George D drop to midfield to see if Jakes pace could get the better of Ferndale, and we did have some chances but they either went wide or just over.

With Ferndale on the attack again the defence of Callum and Miles were having a bit of a nap at the back saw them double their lead. We at this time started to give up and admit defeat, which is wrong – we should play to the whistle all the time, the game isn't over until the ref blow's the final whistle. With a throw in by Miles – Ferndale again intercepted the ball and further good play now with George Hoskin in defence, Callum in midfield and George D off saw them shoot with JD chasing hard the ball just about got over the line, first.

With the final whistle upon us, Bassett felt despondent at the lost but we must not let this defeat stay with us – we have improved and the fact that last time Ferndale beat us 9-1 shows we are getting better, and today saw us make Ferndale look the better side, but this side does have the potential as long as we are all looking for the right result in the end it's only a matter of time.

A special mention today goes to Dave Baskerville (Georges Dad) for all his efforts in being ball-boy for us, he certainly was showing the boys how to run, so congrats to him.
