Bassett draw with Liden to take 4 points over the weekend

Todays game saw us travel to play a mid-table Liden who at the beginning of February managed to beat us 7-3, on our own ground. After a hard fought game we we unlucky to only come away with a point .

The game started brightly with Liden pressuring our goal from the whistle, and within the first two minutes, sloppy play by Bassett saw Liden run straight through and score, Oh no I thought – a repeat of the last time we played. But no – we started waking up – some good running by Jake and Danny down the wings really opened up the game, JD in midfield was still struggling today and not playing to his best ability, the break through for us came when a throw in from Callum found Danny, who may not be the biggest player we have but was determined not to be muscled of the ball – done a good run down the wing leaving the Liden players chasing and then a good cross found Josh who managed to knock in into the net making it 1-1.

More good clearances from Miles in defence and with Jed on for JD in centre midfield we started to play the ball around a bit, with the pace of Jake & Danny giving Liden a hard time, another good run this time from Danny and crossed over but Josh was unlucky this time to see the ball go over the post.

Half time came and went and some talking to the boys about what was required and they didn't disappoint, with Danny taking a rest due to receiving a knock to the knee towards the end of the first half, we had our chances but just couldn't finish them, a throw in by Jed saw another good run by Jake who shot just wide, more running and stops from Miles who has come into his own and proving a bit of a brick wall at the back – bit scary when he goes on one of his runs up through the middle. A free kick by Jake went just wide again so we had a hat-trick of chances going begging. With Danny back on now for Josh and Jed tried up front, we began to falter a bit, with Callum half asleep sometimes in defence we knew we had George in goal and he's another who seems to be improving with every game as the season progresses..

With Callum pushed up front to see if that woke him up, JD dropped to defence and Jed back into his familiar midfield role we started attacking the Liden goal again and again were unlucky not to find the back of the net. With the final minutes left Callum came off and Josh put back up front, a good run by Danny with Josh free in the goal area shouting for him to pass Danny done his trademark and went for goal which would have been a fantastic goal had it gone in but unfortunately went just wide.

When the final whistle blew as I said at the beginning we were unlucky not to come away with the 3 points.

With two games this weekend we have to be proud of the fact that we have taken 4 points out of a possible six, and even though we are still bottom we have closed to gap to one point, and with Ferndale next week the possibility of coming of the bottom is becoming a reality.

We just have to remember that football is a team game and not an individual sport and when a better goal scoring opportunity can be seen then you have to look up and pass.

Well done boys – hopefully onwards and Upwards !!!!!
