Bassett edged out by single goal in 9 goal game

Today saw us play our first game in a month and travelling down the A419 to Cirencester, who at the beginning of the season beat us 3-1 and who are currently lying in second place in the league.

Bassett started brightly, attacking the ball with some good positional play, good runs down the wings by both Jake & Danny started to look promising, and it was from one of these runs by Jake and a good finish that saw us take the lead. Cirencester however were not going to give up easily and battled hard and with some help by sloppy defensive work by Callum and Miles – back in his old position – saw Cirencester not only level the score line but take the lead with two goals in quick succession.

With Bassett re-grouping we again started to work the ball well with Josh up front – gaining more confidence with each game trying hard to find an equaliser. When a corner was awarded to us, Jake found himself on the end of the cross and once again managed to find the back of the net – levelling the score at two all.

With the ground starting to thaw out, sliding tackles became a focus and control of the ball started to get a little difficult, thus saw us in a couple of goal-mouth scrambles to clear the ball from our area, and it was from one of these that saw Jake score at both ends when a clearance went slightly wrong and ended up past the outstretched arms of George B in goal and into our own net. With Josh off and Andrew on – playing his first game for us we were not going to give up and with some strong runs by JD the goal mouth scramble happened at the other end this time and with a bit of help by the Cirencester Goalie we pulled level again.

On the verge of the half time whistle, Bassett's midfield and defence were caught sleeping again and after some good clearances from George B the ball again found itself too easily in our area and the ball was slipped past Georges legs into goal, taking us into the break four – three down.

The second half started as the first had finished – some sleepy defensive and midfield play saw Cirencester take a two-goal advantage. But we were not to give up and with Miles in defence trying to come further up the field if he could he completely forgot what position he was playing in and made a run most of the length of the pitch and god knows how – managed to find the back of the net – bringing the score line and final result to a more deserved five – four. With some corner balls we were unlucky not to score once more to force a point that would have seen us lifted off the bottom of the league.

Overall a better performance than in previous weeks and some of the training the boys are receiving from both Andy, Tom and Tony as and when he can make it is slowly starting to make a difference and it shouldn't be too long before we come off the bottom and start making our way up the table where we belong.

We just need to remember to concentrate, listen and believe in ourselves. Well-done boys for the result in cold weather.
