Bassett stay in touch with the leading pack

Wootton Bassett Town stayed in touch with the leading pack with a 4-0 home win over Wroughton B in a game reversed to protect the Wroughton pitch ahead of the A team′s cup semi-final. It was a tight affair in the opening 20 minutes and it was visitors Wroughton who went closest to breaking the deadlock but a stunning save from Bassett keeper Richard Hanley denied Ben Curtis from opening the scoring. Bassett began to get on top and a succession of corners resulted from the sustained pressure. From one such corner taken by Phillip Tearle the ball travelled at pace across the Wroughton six yard box eluding everyone except Tom Marchment at the far post who bundled the ball into the Wroughton net. Bassett extended their lead from yet another Phil Tearle corner. The ball was again hit in at pace and Wroughton keeper Ben Goodey did well to prevent the ball going straight into the net but the ball dropped to Josh Dimond who maintained his recent good goal scoring form and fired the ball into the net. 2-0 at the break and with Wootton Bassett firmly in control and Wroughton havong lost keeper Goodey to injury. Bassett continued to have the better of the second half and went further in front courtesy of an own goal from the edge of the 18 yard box by a Wroughton defender. James Terry then rounded off an excellent game with his first goal of the season for the Under 16′s with a deft lob over the Wroughton keeper to make it 4-0 to Bassett.
