Surprise defeat as poor season continues

The Under 14's season of woe continued as they slipped to yet another defeat, this time at the hands of Second Division Highworth Town in a friendly; Highworth giving Bassett a lesson in finishing. Playing with the wind in the first period Bassett failed to take advantage of the elements; a strong wind blowing from one end of the pitch to the other, and all they had to show was a single Phil Tearle goal, Tearle scoring direct from a corner. With an almost non-existent Bassett midfield at times it did not take long for Highworth to get back on level terms as Carl Leppard ran almost unchallenged from the half-way line and fired an unstoppable shot past Sean Toomey in the Bassett goal. A similar goal followed as a Highworth player again rode a couple of weak Bassett tackles to fire the home side in front. At times the Bassett players seemed frightened of the taller Highworth players and this does not bode well for Holland. The nearest Bassett came to scoring was when Phil Tearle was put through twice against the keeper but on both occasions the ball took an awkward bounce just as he lined up to shoot. In a day of poor performances there were a couple of players who can escape criticism; Brett Embling gave some of the older players a lesson in commitment and battled well throughout and Dan Strange and William McCurrach had reasonable games but the midfield was just not at the races today and needs to improve in the big match coming up against Eastville else Bassett are likely to finish bottom of the league.
