Win for Bassett Under 14's in opening game of the season

This game was a lot closer than the final score line would suggest. In a tight first half there was little to choose between the two sides. Ferndale looked particularly strong from corner kicks and but for a goal line clearance from Dominc Juggins from one such corner, Bassett would have trailed at the break. Craig Munday in the Bassett goal was the busier of the two keepers as Bassett struggled to get their passing game together.

At the start of the second half the home side broke the deadlock. The harsh award of a free kick on the edge of the box when Josh Dimond appeared to have won the ball cleanly saw Steve Green curl the resulting free kick into the top corner of the net. Bassett introduced Mike Ford and the substitution paid off almost immediately when he headed Bassett back on level terms from a Phillip Tearle corner. This was after Stuart Smedley had cleared another off the line for Bassett, had Bassett gone 2-0 down a comeback would not have looked on the cards but the confidence could be seen by all once Ford had equalised. Bassett then scored almost immediately from the restart after Phillip Tearle got behind the home sides defence and lobbed keeper Watts. Further goals from Jonny Aitkenhead and another from Phillip Tearle saw Bassett comfortable winners in the end as the Ferndale defence became undisciplined and lost their shape.
