Unconvincing performance

Bassett went second in the table, but this was an unconvincing performance against bottom of the table Marlborough.

Marlborough scored first within the first ten minutes before Stuart Smedley equalised for Wootton Bassett on 15 minutes with a shot from the edge of the box following a corner. Marlborough regained the lead, but Phil Tearle brought the scores level a minute before the break when he raced clear of the defence and fired an unstoppable shot past the Marlborough keeper. Within 30 seconds of the restart Wootton Bassett went in front for the first time, Tearle again the scorer with an almost identical goal. Marlborough continued to play well and were awarded a penalty following a foul by Bassett's best player on the day, Josh Dimond, just inside the box. Sean Toomey, Bassett's stand in keeper due to the regular keeper still being on holiday, saved the initial penalty but the penalty taker followed up to hit the rebound into the net. Bassett pushed forward in the last 20 minutes and were rewarded with goals from Tom Marchment and Jonny Aitkenhead, the latter scoring from the penalty spot after he was brought down in the box to bring to an end his run of games without a goal. Phil Tearle had a number of opportunities to extend Bassett's lead but in the end, Bassett had to settle for a 5-3 win having been made to work hard by an improved Marlborough side for whom Josh Digby had an excellent game.
