Derby disappointment

Barrington Park, 4 April 2023

After Saturday's impressive away win against Roman Glass St George raised hopes of a fifth place Hellenic League Premier Division finish, Royal Wootton Bassett Town suffered an immediate, significant setback, losing a frustrating derby 1-0 away at Shrivenham.

A fixture that offered little in the way of excitement or quality was decided by Jordan Wilkins' finish into the top corner with just under quarter of an hour to go.

Prior to that neither side had created much, though there was some late controversy and drama.

Shortly after the hosts took the lead, a confrontation between the two teams saw red cards produced for Bassett's Kai Robinson and Shrivenham's Callum Parsons.

Substitute Alan Griffin then struck the bar with a late free kick as Bassett failed to find an equaliser.

The two teams go at it again on Friday at the Sustain Stadium in Bassett's final home fixture of the season.

Hopefully that contest will produce more excitement - and a different outcome as Sam Collier's side seek to bounce back and climb higher than the seventh place they still currently occupy.
