A night to fog-get

Sustain Stadium, Gerard Buxton Sports Ground, 30 November 2022

Royal Wootton Bassett Town's Hellenic League Premier Division contest against Tuffley Rovers was abandoned due to fog ten minutes before half time.

At the point at which the match was called to a halt, the scores were level at 1-1.

Kieran Alder had given the visitors the lead, blocking Landon Golding's attempted clearance inside the penalty area before neatly poking home from close range.

Bassett soon levelled when Louis Spalding headed into the top corner from a fine free kick delivery.

However the action was brought to an inevitable early end as the fog that had descended grew ever thicker.

It was therefore a bit of a wasted night for all involved.

Tuffley travelled from Glocuester for the sake of just over thirty minutes' worth of ultimately meaningless football. For Bassett, with a third round FA Vase tie looming on Saturday, the players were needlessly put through their paces. Meanwhile, the spectators in attendance missed out on the chance to stay in the warm and be kept entertained by World Cup action.

The outcome certainly raises questions about the Hellenic League's decision to throw in a midweek fixture at the end of November when both teams involved have already played almost half of their league games.

At least the league had the decency to move the match from its original scheduled date of 29 November - which would have meant it clashed with England's fixture against Wales!
