Presley strikes early to seal double double

Mundy Playing Fields, 27 September 2022

It may not have been a game that lives long in the memory for those in attendance, and it certainly wasn't Royal Wootton Bassett Town's best performance of the season. But Sam Collier's side did enough to seal a 1-0 win away at Thornbury Town - thus completing a league double over their opponents to follow on from that secured against Mangotsfield United last week.

Alfie Presley's third minute goal was all that Bassett needed, the forward producing a powerful drive that home 'keeper Mackenzie Welsh was unable to prevent from going through his hands.

The game produced little else of note, save for a first half sending off for Thornbury's Jack Sheppard-Cozens that limited the hosts' hopes of salvaging something from the game. Still without a win in the Hellenic League Premier Division this season, having to play the majority of the match a man short was not what they needed.

For Bassett, the result lifts the team into the heady heights of third place.

And next up is a challenge that Bassett should relish after such a strong start, with the visit of leaders Cribbs - who are currently unbeaten - to the Sustain Stadium.

Can Bassett be the first team to topple the division's top dogs in the league? It should be a good one on Saturday.
