Late drama seals return to winning ways

Paul Sellick Brickwork Stadium, 20 September 2022

Following on from Saturday's last minute salvation against Lydney Town, Royal Wootton Bassett Town were involved in some more late drama on their first ever competitive visit to face Mangotsfield United. Rather than having to settle for a draw, this time Sam Collier's side claimed all three points courtesy of Jack Hobson-McVeigh's long range winner.

Bassett seemed on their way to a second successive draw after a closely contested, competitive fixture. Instead though, Collier and his team made it two wins for the season against the Mangos, ended a run of four games without victory and climbed into fifth place in the Hellenic League Premier Division.

This was another game in which Bassett led as Tommy Ouldridge struck to open the scoring for the visitors after just five minutes.

Mangotsfield - improved in recent weeks after a slow start to the season following relegation from the Southern League - were back level shortly after the half hour mark though as Will Hailston produced a fine solo effort that he finished off in style.

The hosts ended the opening period in the ascendancy and continued to apply pressure in the early stages of the second half.

However, Bassett held firm - and eventually it was their turn to seize control of the match.

Doing so late on though meant that time was not necessarily on their side to change the outcome of the game. And it appeared as if the match was set to end all square when Luke Whelan found himself one-on-one with Mangotsfield 'keeper Ash Clark only to be denied.

Yet, there was to be one further twist as Hobson-McVeigh was afforded space to fashion a shot and the midfielder produced a precise, powerful strike from distance that Clark had no answer to.

However late it arrived, the win was a great way for Bassett to start a difficult looking run of seven fixtures that features six away from home.

Now onto the next one - and the chance to complete another season double, this time against Thornbury Town.
