Quickfire double condemns Bassett

New Gerard Buxton Sports Ground, Wednesday 2nd March 2016

Royal Wootton Bassett Town fell to a second home defeat in succession as they were beaten 2-0 by Highmoor Ibis.

In a crucial battle for league position as they seek to claim a top half finish in the Hellenic League Premier Division, Royal Wootton Bassett Town were defeated 2-0 by Highmoor Ibis courtesy of a quickfire, two goal suckerpunch near to the hour.

Victory would have seen Bassett jump above their Reading-based opponents. However, having never before beaten them, history was not on the side of Paul Braithwaite's team, and come full time that remained the case.

Both teams showed intent in a rather lively opening period - one which Bassett arguably shaded. Yet this produced no goals.

The game's critical came on the hour when Anthony White powerfully headed home Mitchell Parker's left wing cross.

The pair soon reversed roles with Parker squeezing a shot beyond Curtis Meare following build-up play from Parker.

For Bassett there would be no overhauling that deficit. And the frustrating nature of their evening was summed up when Steve Olphert, normally ice cold from twelve yards out, squandered a penalty awarded for a foul, which saw the visitors - prone to disciplinary problems - reduced to ten men.
