Second half goals from Harvey Scholes, who scored with his first touch of the game, and Ryan Thomas helped seal an excellent 2-0 away victory for Royal Wootton Bassett Town against Oxford City Nomads.
Royal Wootton Bassett Town got their Hellenic League Premier Division campaign up and running in fine style as a pair of second half goals lifted them to a 2-0 away victory against bogey side Oxford City Nomads.
Not since August 2010 had Bassett defeated the Nomads, with subsequent meetings yielding four defeats and a solitary draw.
Now though that streak is over.
Bassett certainly took the hard road to ending that run of Oxford dominance. While the first half was an even affair, with the visitors enjoying the best chance early on as Dale Richards squandered a one-on-one opportunity, it was the Nomads who came out sharpest after the restart.
And their efforts in the second period's early stages soon earned a penalty. However, Bassett were able to breathe a sigh of relief when the spot kick came crashing back off the bar.
Then, shortly after the hour, the introduction of Harvey Scholes altered the game as the Bassett midfielder, taking on the mantle of super-sub, scored with his first touch of the game.
Bassett preserved that lead with a solid defensive effort, and went on to make sure of all three points as Ryan Thomas' cross sailed in to add a second, much to the frustration of the hosts, who would finish the game with ten men.
