County Cup cruise as students are sent packing

New Gerard Buxton Sports Ground, Saturday 7th November 2015

Royal Wootton Bassett Town brushed aside New College Swindon in their Wiltshire Senior Cup second round clash, defeating the student side 4-0 to book a quarter final place.

Their form indifferent of late, Royal Wootton Bassett Town were hoping to take advantage of a break from league action to restore some confidence. And they used their Wiltshire Senior Cup tie against New College Swindon to good effect, cruising to a 4-0 triumph and a place in the quarter finals of the county competition for a second consecutive season.

Always in charge of the game having raced into a two goal lead after just eight minutes, Bassett secured the added bonus of a clean sheet against their Hellenic League Division One West opposition too.

All in all, it was an afternoon Paul Braithwaite and his troops could be pleased with.

The returning Steve Robertson struck first, scoring after just two minutes before Tyler Sheppard's header quickly doubled the advantage.

Another pair of quickfire goals in the second half then made certain of an extremely convincing margin of victory.

Joe Hiscock was the initial player to get in on the act after the restart. With seventeen minutes remaining, he netted his first goal since re-joining the club from Purton.

Four minutes later Robertson completed the rout, heading in from a Dan Comer cross.

Now the challenge awaiting Bassett is to go at least one round further than they managed last season, when they fell short in the last eight against Bradford Town.

Achieving that is going to be a tough task: the field has been whittled down to a select bunch of quality teams, Melksham Town, Salisbury and reigning holders Highworth Town among them. But there's no reason why Bassett can't compete with these sides and edge to within a game of a first final appearance since the club's second County Cup triumph in 2001.
