Bassett have an off day

Today′s game was a league match away against Purton. Looking at their recent results we should be looking to get all three points as long as we performed to our usual high standard.

We started well and played the better football in the first half. We created several chances but were unable to apply the finishing touch. The score was 0-0 at half time but I felt very confident that it would just be a matter of time in the second half until we made the breakthrough.

The second half was totally dominated by Bassett and Purton could not get out of their own penalty area let alone their own half. I think at one stage we had seven consecutive corners but we still could not score. We hit the post, hit the bar, the ball was cleared off the line several times and the goalkeeper performed heroics. As we applied more and more pressure everyone thought we would score. Totally against the run of play Purton made a long clearance to their lone forward (all other players were defending in their penalty area) who managed to get past Eddie and Robert and score with a cool finish.

Unbelievable!!!

Our heads did not go down and we worked even harder than ever to get the equaliser but you could just tell it was not going to be our day. All credit to Purton who defended as if their lives depended on it but I have to say that the score was definitely not a true reflection of the game but sometimes that′s Football!

A good team performance without any reward where a little bit more composure on the ball would have paid dividends. It was a real shame to lose our unbeaten record in this way. To all of our Parents and Players who left the game in disbelief – don′t worry we can put it right next week!
