Bassett lose to league leaders

This match report is compiled relying on a second hand report from the all-seeing 3rd eye. The Wife!!!

Another difficult away match for the Bassett Bee′s against South Cerney who are flying at the moment and apart from the first 5 minutes when the Bee′s controlled the match, it showed. The Bee′s kept South Cerney under pressure with Matthew and Josh combining well but again no goals came their way.

It seemed then as though the lads thought, "We′re playing really well and holding a better team we had better show them some respect." The first half then collapsed, with no commitment in the tackling and too much respect shown to South Cerney in all departments.

Tom then came more and more under pressure and made some terrific saves, however the old gremlins struck again and South Cerneys first goal came from an unfortunate deflection off a Bee′s defender.

Despite Tom′s spirited goal keeping 2 more goals got past him and South Cerney ended the first half 3 nil up.

Half Time South Cerney 3 Wootton Bassett 0

At half time Pod really spelt it out to the lads that their performance in the first half was rubbish, apart from Tom in goal who again prevented a rout, and unless they pulled their fingers out he could be seeing the Chairman in the morning!!!

The talking to had an immediate effect and the lads started the second half with a much firmer resolve. Declan was inspired and fought for every ball and combined with Callum, Matthew, and Theo to create some good chances. Theo for one was unlucky not to score. The defence also woke up and Teddy and George covered very well both holding their positions. Jack Watling was moved up into midfield and seemed to be very comfortable in that position distributing the ball well and almost scoring.

Some good passing between Joshua, Dec and Matthew coupled with sound defending from Teddy and George and some aggressive goalkeeping from Tom saw the Bee′s through the second half without conceding another goal. Had this resolve, tenacity and aggression been shown in the first half a draw would have been a fair result.

Final Score South Cerney 3 Wootton Bassett B 0

It would seem that the lads again showed too much respect to South Cerney in the first half and paid the price, conceding 3 goals. In the second half it seemed like a new Bassett Team took to the field, showing much more resolve and toughness in all departments. The lads are the equal of any team in their league and need to believe it in future matches otherwise they will let slip a golden opportunity to end the season in the top half of the league.
