Not so magical mystery tour

It was a lovely morning for a mystery tour of Hungerford but we eventually arrived at the ground well ahead of the 10-30 start. Wootton Bassett kicked off in front of a near capacity crowd but were put under pressure by Hungerford immediately, however our defence, in the form of Ted, George and Tom in goal managed to ward off all the efforts on goal. Bassett started to settle down and mount some good attacking moves with Dec shooting just wide. Not long after Dec again tried to lob the Hungerford keeper from a great cross by Josh. Tom saved a great shot from close range only for the ball to be touched in for an unfortunate own goal. Bassett′s run of bad luck continued with a Hungerford shot being deflected and swerving viciously, well beyond the reach of Tom in goal. Bassett absorbed a lot of attacking moves with good defensive work and goal keeping. A long drop kick from Tom was picked up by Mathew, who again was unlucky not to score. The tide was starting to turn in our favour with some good moves from Josh, Callum and Dec, Ted also got in on the action with a great shot at goal from long range just before half time. The first half was quite physical with Ted, Dec and Callum all getting hurt.

Half Time 2-0

Jack Watling came on for an injured Ted in the second half. Hungerford attacked again right from the kick off winning a corner which Tom punched out and Dec cleared. Dec sustained an accidental kick in the mouth from a Hungerford player and went down for several minutes but bravely played on. Dec lost about £10 worth of teeth!!! At this stage Bassett had a mountain to climb playing up hill and into a stiff breeze but to their credit kept plugging away but to no avail. Tom touched out another corner and forced Hungerford′s No 11 to shoot wide. A mass attack by Hungerford resulted in their 3rd goal of the match. Near the end of the game "Lady Bad Luck" struck again and we conceded another own goal. Despite all the bad luck the lads continued to fight to the end and were rewarded with a great goal by Josh Rowland. This was the lads first defeat in the league but we were all proud of the way they battled on in the face of some outrageous misfortune. Again great support from the parents who were all justifiably proud of the boys.
