Bassett lose by the odd goal in 13!

Wet, Cold, Miserable and it′s Chucking it down. The lads however were all eager to start their 1st league match for 3 weeks and hopefully carry on their good form of late. The crowd were entertained prior to the start of the match by Dec′s mum doing a graceful downhill skiing manoeuvre on the muddy slopes!

Bassett, playing against a strong wind and driving rain, conceded the first goal of the match after 2 minutes Tom unable to stop a powerful shot low into the bottom left corner. Good defending by Tom in goal prevents further scoring by Wanborough. After 5 minutes Josh scores a great equalizer. Tom comes out of goal and dives at the feet of an advancing Wanborough player and stops another certain goal. Solid defending by Ted and George save several Wanborough attacks from ending in shots on goal.

Under pressure we concede another goal in appalling conditions with Tom finding it difficult to hang onto a wet and greasy ball. Matthew comes on to replace George and just misses a scoring chance. Callum with the perseverance of a Rotweiler eventually finds the back of the net after 4 shots had been blocked too again bring the scores level. After a quarter of an hour Matthew latches onto a loose ball and scores for Bassett to take the lead for the first time at 4-3.

Basset take the lead with a great goal by Josh from a good ball by Dec. More good defending and stops by Tom as we soak up the pressure and the rain. Just before half time Wanborough equalise to end the first half even at 4 all.

Half Time 4-4

Just after the restart Bassett are the victim of a very dubious hand ball decision in the box and Wanborough again take the lead at 4-5. Some fine defending by Tom in goal and the back line of Ted and Jack cannot stop another Wanborough goal after 7 minutes of the second half.

Bassett start to dominate the second half with some good attacking play and are rewarded with a third goal by Josh to bring the score back to 5-6. Good work by Theo finds Callum who fires an unstoppable shot past the Wanborough keeper from the half way line to again level the score at 6 apiece.

Against the run of play Tom is unable to hold onto a shot that just crawls over the line. With not long to go Bassett put the Wanborough keeper under enormous pressure with shot after shot being blocked in a mamouth scramble to get an equaliser. However it was not to be and at the final whistle Bassett ended up being the unlucky losers 6-7 in a game where a draw would have been a fair result.

Some positives to take away from this match are that the lads never gave up and tried their hardest on the day but did not get what they deserved. The parents again were out in force to support the lads, despite the weather, and are looking forward to a bit of washing this afternoon no doubt!
