Bassett show too much respect to opponents Robins

It was a bright sunny but very cold afternoon at Ballards Ash for this 3rd round tie against the Swindon Robins. This was to be the toughest test yet for the Bassett Bee′s as the Robins are a very accomplished side who are well above them in the league structure.

The first half was dominated by the Robins who were well organised and found a lot of freedom in front of goal. Only stout defending by Ted and Callum and some brilliant goalkeeping by Tom prevented a first half rout. Dec Josh and Callum made a couple of runs at the Robins goal only to be thwarted by a solid defence.

Half Time 0-2

The second half was a little better as we were kicking down hill and down wind. Dec and Matthew had a couple of good chances but the goals wouldn′t come. The Robins defence blocked two consecutive efforts by Callum and Josh.

Jack Clark, George Ted and Jack Watling all had a lot to deal with in defence as corner after corner, cross after cross came in from the Robins attack. The Robins only managed to score once in the second half thanks, in the main, to some outstanding goalkeeping by Tom

Full Time 0-3.

I would say that the team showed way too much respect, politeness and deference to the Robins. I believe that the lads have to toughen up and feel that they are at least the equal of any of the teams they will meet in the future. Having said all that I still feel the lads did very well to only concede 3 goals against a far superior, well organised and stronger side.
